Singing along with Pat Benatar as she belts out “Love is a Battlefield” is the quintessential moment I have from the 80s. She was screaming the truth to me and she looked good doing it. Here I was listening to this woman with an incredibly powerful voice singing this amazing song while discovering my own female power and place in the world. She was strong and I wanted to be just like her.
One thing I think about the 80s is that we didn’t hold back. Sure, some of the stuff we did was pretty crazy, but we went for it. It was new, totally different and we were making a statement to our parents about our individuality. We wanted to be hot and cool so yes, we were going to dress like it. At least the outfits weren’t particularly slutty, just revealing in the the right places.
